Anything with a market price gets ranked, and ranking changes how you feel about owning it. Something nobody else wants is exempt from all that: there is no better version, no resale value, no one to be envied by, only the fact that you like it. That exemption is worth more than it sounds, because comparison is what turns most pleasures into positions.

Notice which of your things you have never assessed against anyone else’s. Those are usually the ones you actually enjoy, and they are a decent guide to what you would choose if nobody were looking.
