A workplace becomes more truthful when people can report ordinary limits without staging a crisis.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

When small problems cannot be said plainly, they get saved up and delivered as emergencies. Somebody who cannot say that a deadline is unrealistic either absorbs it silently or turns up one day with a resignation. The escalation is a symptom of what the ordinary channel would not carry. Honest information needs a cheap route.

If you lead anything, make it easy to say a plain no or a plain not by Friday, and receive those without punishment. If you work under someone, try one small factual statement of a limit and watch what happens. Truthfulness follows from what is safe to say early.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Can people tell you bad news before it has become an emergency?
