Originality is less about having no influences and more about digesting them completely.

Everyone is made of influences, and pretending otherwise just means yours are undigested and showing. Originality is what happens when the sources have been absorbed so completely that they act like instinct rather than reference. The influence is still there, it has simply stopped being quotable.

Notice when your work is imitating and when it is remembering. Imitation reaches for the source while working, memory does not. Give yourself enough repetitions with borrowed technique that you stop having to look at where it came from.
