The work becomes yours when the choices inside it could only have come from you.

Ownership of work is not a matter of authorship on paper. It comes from the accumulation of small decisions that reflect a specific history, a particular set of interests, a way of noticing that nobody else has. Competent work can be made by anyone trained the same way, but the choices that could not be substituted are what make it yours.

Look at your last finished piece and find the decisions anyone in your field would have made. Then find the ones that came from somewhere else. Make more room for the second kind next time.
