Man is not the creature of circumstances. Circumstances are the creatures of men.

— Benjamin Disraeli

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Conditions that feel fixed were mostly made by people, and what people made can be altered. Not all of it, and not by anyone at any time, since plenty of circumstances arrive with real weight and no consent. Still, a surprising amount of what gets described as simply the way things are turns out to be a set of decisions that nobody has revisited. Treating everything as given is its own kind of decision.

Take one thing in your situation you have been calling immovable. Ask who made it that way, and whether there is a person you could actually speak to about it.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which circumstance do you treat as fixed when it is not?
