Power will intoxicate the best hearts, as wine the strongest heads. No man is wise enough, nor good enough to be trusted with unlimited power.

LEADERSHIP
Character does not protect against power, it only takes longer to fail. The effect works on everyone, gradually and without announcing itself, because unchecked authority removes the friction of being contradicted, and that friction was doing most of the correcting. Assuming you would be the exception is the first symptom. This is why arrangements matter more than the goodness of whoever is currently in charge.
Wherever you hold authority, however small, keep something in place that can tell you no: a colleague who disagrees openly, a rule you cannot waive, a review you did not design. Protect that thing when it becomes inconvenient, which is exactly when it is working.
Who tells you no when you have the final say?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
