No man is happy without a delusion of some kind. Delusions are as necessary to our happiness as realities.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Nobody runs on pure accuracy. Some of what keeps you going is unproven: that the work will matter, that the people you love will be here next year, that the effort is worth it. Strictly, none of that is knowledge. It is a set of hopeful assumptions you act on because a life examined down to the bone is not livable.

Rather than stripping out every comfortable belief, sort them by what they cost. A hope that keeps you working is doing useful service; a story that keeps you in a bad arrangement is not. Keep the ones you would still choose with your eyes open.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which comfortable belief of yours would you rather not examine?
