The winds and waves are always on the side of the ablest navigators.

— Edward Gibbon

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Luck looks unevenly distributed because skill makes different use of the same conditions. Two people get the identical break, and one turns it into something while the other lets it pass, so it looks as though the break only happened to one of them. The wind is not choosing sides. It is simply that someone who knows the boat can sail on what would leave another drifting.

Instead of asking for better conditions, ask what you would need to know in order to use the ones you have. Name the single skill that would turn your current situation from awkward into workable, and spend an hour a week on it.
