Everything has two handles,—one by which it may be borne; another by which it cannot.

— Epictetus

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

The same event can be picked up in more than one way, and one of the ways cannot be carried. A brother who wronged you can be held as a wrong, which is unbearable to keep hold of, or as a brother, which is heavy but possible. Nothing about the facts changes between the two grips. What changes is whether the thing can be lifted at all.

Take whatever you are carrying badly and describe it a second way, same facts and different emphasis. If the second description lets you move, use it, not because it is prettier but because you still have a week to get through.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which hard thing could you pick up from a different side?
