Princes are like to heavenly bodies, which cause good or evil times, and which have much veneration but no rest.

— Francis Bacon

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Whoever holds the top position is watched constantly and never off duty. Their moods make the weather for everyone below, so their bad morning becomes a bad week for people they never spoke to, and the respect they are shown is partly what people show to something they must plan around. What looks from below like enviable deference is, from inside, a permanent audience.

If anyone depends on your mood, a team or a household, treat your steadiness as part of the job rather than a private matter. And if you are the one reading someone else’s weather, remember their mood is usually about their day, not about you.
