We may give advice, but we cannot inspire the conduct.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

You can hand someone the right answer and you cannot make them want it. The words go across easily; what does not travel is whatever makes a person act, which has to be generated inside them out of their own reasons and their own moment. That is why repeating good advice to someone you love is so unrewarding. The information was never the missing part.

With the person you keep advising, stop supplying answers and start asking what they want to happen. Then make it as easy as you can for them to move an inch in that direction, and be prepared to wait without keeping score.
