Few people know how to be old.

STILLNESS
Growing older is automatic; doing it well is not. It asks for things nobody practises: letting go of authority without becoming bitter, staying curious when the world stops consulting you, taking pleasure in what is still available rather than auditing what is not. People who manage it usually started before they needed to. Those who do not often spend their later years arguing with a version of the world that has moved.
Whatever age you are, notice which of those capacities you are building. Keep one interest that is genuinely new to you this year, and practise handing something over before it is taken.
Who have you watched grow old well?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
