The pleasure of love is in loving. We are happier in the passion we feel than in that we inspire.

— François de La Rochefoucauld

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

The better part belongs to the one doing the loving. Being adored is pleasant and slightly passive, a matter of receiving something and hoping it continues, whereas loving someone is an activity that fills your days and gives them a direction. This is why the pursuit of being wanted so often disappoints. It puts you on the receiving end of a feeling you are not having.

If you are waiting to be chosen, turn some of that attention outward this week. Take an interest in someone properly, do something for them without accounting for it, and notice which of the two positions actually feels better to occupy.
