We always like those who admire us; we do not always like those whom we admire.

— François de La Rochefoucauld

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Admiration is comfortable to receive and not entirely comfortable to give. The person who thinks well of you asks nothing difficult and confirms something you hope is true, so liking them costs nothing. The person you look up to is a standing comparison, and comparison is uncomfortable even when it is affectionate, which is why admiration and resentment sit so close together.

Have a look at who you have gathered around you. If they are mostly people who approve of you, add someone who is better than you at something and stay near them long enough for the discomfort to become useful.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Who do you admire without especially liking them?
