A title can create authority without creating respect.

A title gives you the ability to require things. It gives you nothing regarding whether people believe you, want to work with you, or would follow you without the structure. Those are earned separately and slowly, and the gap between the two is visible to everyone except the person who confuses them.

Ask what people would still bring you if you had no authority over them. Whatever that is, it is your actual standing. Build from there rather than from the position.
