We judge ourselves by what we feel capable of doing, while others judge us by what we have already done.

— Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

You have access to your own intentions and to nobody else’s, which makes the comparison permanently unfair in both directions. Inside your head there is a version of you capable of far more than the record shows, and it feels real because you can see the plans. Other people get no such credit from you; they get their output. Then you are surprised when they assess you the same way.

Two corrections follow. Judge others a little more by what you cannot see, since they have unfinished plans too, and judge yourself more by what you have finished. The second is uncomfortable and it is the one that changes anything.
