Success does not consist in never making blunders, but in never making the same one the second time.

— Josh Billings

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Mistakes are not the problem; repetition is. A first error is the cost of doing anything at all, and it buys information you cannot get otherwise. The second identical error buys nothing, because you already had the information and did not convert it into a change. What separates people over years is not how often they err but how reliably they convert.

After the next thing that goes wrong, do not stop at feeling bad about it. Write one sentence about what you will do differently and one about what would have caught it earlier. Then change something concrete: a checklist, a deadline, a person you consult first.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which mistake have you now made twice without changing anything?
