Do not think of knocking out another person’s brains because he differs in opinion from you. It would be as rational to knock yourself on the head because you differ from yourself ten years ago.

— Horace Mann

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Whoever disagrees with you occupies roughly the position you held at some earlier point, or will hold later. Your own views have changed considerably and you did not consider your former self an enemy, merely someone with less information. Extending that to a living opponent costs nothing and changes the temperature. Certainty about the present is the one thing your own history should have cured.

Next time an opinion angers you, ask when you might have held something like it. Then argue with the position rather than the person holding it. If you cannot state their view in a way they would accept, you are not arguing with it.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What did you believe ten years ago that you now reject?
