A man may twist as he pleases, and do what he pleases, but he inevitably comes back to the track to which nature has destined him.

— Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Detours can run for years and still deliver you to roughly what you were always going to do. Interests that will not die, a temperament that keeps reasserting itself, a kind of work you drift back toward whenever the pressure lifts: these are stubborn facts about you rather than moods. Fighting them tends to waste the years; recognising them early saves a great deal of effort.

Look at what you have returned to three or four times in your life despite deciding against it. Give it a proper place this year rather than treating it as a weakness you have not yet corrected.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What do you always return to after every detour?
