One man’s word is no man’s word; we should quietly hear both sides.

— Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

A single account, however convincing, is only the shape one person’s interest gives the facts. It rarely arrives as a lie. It arrives as a story that is complete from where the teller stands and missing everything they did not need to mention. Conviction grows fast when you have heard only one version, and it is at its most confident just before the second version arrives.

Hold your conclusion this week on whatever dispute you have only heard one side of. Ask the other person what happened, before you decide you already know.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which dispute did you settle after hearing only one person?
