Be charitable and indulgent to every one but yourself.

— Joseph Joubert

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Two standards are being recommended: a generous one for everybody else and a demanding one for you. The asymmetry is deliberate, because the only conduct you actually control is your own, and softness there tends to spread. The danger is obvious, since a demanding standard can curdle into a permanent prosecution of yourself. Held well, it means expecting more of your effort and less of your excuses, not thinking worse of yourself as a person.

Notice where you are accepting a reason from yourself that you would gently question in a friend. Meet that one properly this week, and keep the generosity flowing outward where it belongs.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What do you excuse in yourself but never in others?
