Though fame is smoke, its fumes are frankincense to human thoughts.

— Lord Byron

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Recognition is thin stuff and it still goes to the head. Knowing that praise is air does not stop it smelling sweet, and most people who claim indifference are careful not to be seen wanting it. The danger is not enjoying it, it is starting to make decisions in order to get more.

Notice what you would do differently this week if nobody would ever know you had done it. If a project loses most of its appeal under that test, the appeal was in the notice rather than the work. Enjoy the applause, and keep the choosing separate from it.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What recognition still pleases you more than it should?
