The foolish and the dead alone never change their opinion.

— James Russell Lowell

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Holding the same view for a lifetime is not loyalty, it is a sign that nothing has been let in. Living minds revise, because the evidence keeps arriving and some of it does not fit what you already thought. Changing position in public feels like losing, which is why people defend views they no longer believe.

Find one opinion you hold that you have not examined in years and go looking for the strongest case against it. Not to overturn it necessarily, but to see whether you still hold it for reasons or out of habit.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which of your opinions has not moved in ten years?
