No form of Nature is inferior to Art; for the arts merely imitate natural forms.

— Marcus Aurelius

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

What grows without design is not a rougher draft of what people make; it is the original that making borrows from. A tree, a face, a stretch of coast, has more going on in it than any rendering of it. There is no need to improve nature to find it worth attention.

Spend twenty minutes this week looking at something ordinary and unmade: the sky at the end of the day, a hedge, the grain in a table. No photograph, no purpose. It is one of the few pleasures that needs nothing bought and no skill acquired.
