It takes a long time to bring excellence to maturity.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Real competence accumulates at a rate you cannot feel from inside it. Months of ordinary practice produce nothing visible, then something is suddenly easy that was hard, and the change is invisible on any given day. Impatience is the main thing that ends this process, because people quit during the stretch where nothing appears to be happening.

Choose one thing you want to be genuinely good at and set the horizon in years rather than weeks. Decide what the small repeated version looks like on a bad day. Then stop checking for progress every fortnight and measure it once a year.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What skill are you rushing that simply needs more years?
