If the single man plant himself indomitably on his instincts, and there abide, the huge world will come round to him.

— Ralph Waldo Emerson

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Persistence in a position, held long enough and with genuine conviction, tends to move the people around it, because most opinions are lightly held and yours is not. The world does not usually argue you out of things, it waits to see whether you meant it. Most people fold before the waiting is over.

This only works when the instinct is worth standing on, so test it first and ask whether you would still hold it if it never became popular. If yes, stop relitigating it every time someone raises an eyebrow. Say it the same way for a year and see what happens.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What instinct did you abandon because nobody else agreed with it?
