There is nothing settled in manners, but the laws of behaviour yield to the energy of the individual.

— Ralph Waldo Emerson

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Social rules feel fixed until somebody with enough conviction simply does otherwise, and then it turns out they were only conventions. Much of what constrains you is held in place by the assumption that everyone else agrees with it. A person acting with real purpose bends the rules around them without ever arguing about them.

Pick one convention you follow that costs you something and does not serve anyone. The meeting you always attend, the format you always use, the tone you always adopt. Change it once without announcing it and see whether anyone objects, since usually the rule was thinner than it looked.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which unwritten rule around you would bend if you simply acted?
