No man undertakes a trade he has not learned, even the meanest; yet every one thinks himself sufficiently qualified for the hardest of all trades,—that of government.

LEADERSHIP
Nobody would attempt plumbing without training, and almost everybody has confident views on running a country. The pattern holds beyond politics: people respect expertise where the failure is immediate and visible, and assume it away where the consequences are diffuse and slow. Raising children, managing people, governing anything: the harder the task and the vaguer the feedback, the more certain the untrained tend to be.
Pick a domain where you have strong views and no training and find out what practitioners actually argue about. You will usually discover the question you thought was simple has four parts. That discovery is worth more than the opinion you started with.
Which responsibility did you take on without ever learning the craft?
