The mob have neither judgment nor principle,—ready to bawl at night for the reverse of what they desired in the morning.

— Tacitus

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

A crowd can want the opposite thing by evening and feel entirely consistent doing it. Nobody in it is weighing anything; the mood moves, and each person adjusts to the people beside them, which makes the whole thing capable of reversing overnight with no memory of the morning. Numbers on your side are not the same as being right.

So take neither the applause nor the pile-on as a verdict. When a crowd approves of you, check the decision against what you thought before they noticed. When it turns, wait a week before rearranging your life, and ask one person you trust what they actually saw.
