War loves to seek its victims in the young.

— Sophocles

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

The people who pay for a conflict are seldom the ones who chose it. The young are sent because they are strong and available, and because the loss is hardest to see from where the decision gets made. Any argument for a fight sounds cheaper from a distance.

It is worth carrying that into much smaller decisions. When you back a hard course, ask plainly who will absorb the cost of it and whether they had any say. If the answer is someone with less power than you, the case needs to be stronger than it currently is.
