The person who survives the fall learns things the person watching from the ledge never could.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

There is knowledge that only becomes available on the way down: what actually helps, who stays, how much of your fear was about imagined consequences, and what you are like when the options run out. From the ledge it all remains theory, and theory tends to be confident and wrong. This is not an argument for falling. It is a reason not to accept advice from people who never have.

If you have come through something, take your own experience seriously as a source of knowledge rather than only as damage. And be careful about whose counsel you weight most heavily. Confidence from a safe distance is a poor substitute for having been there.
