No legacy is so rich as honesty.

— William Shakespeare

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

What you leave behind is mostly the reliability of your word. Money gets spent, positions pass to somebody else, and advice is forgotten within a year, but the knowledge that you could be believed stays attached to your name and to everyone who learned it from you. Children in particular inherit it as a working assumption about how people behave.

Think about what the people closest to you have learned from watching how you handle inconvenient truths. Then handle the next one the way you would want them to. That is the transfer, and it happens in ordinary moments rather than in a will.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What would your children inherit from you that is not money?
