Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.

— Mark Twain

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Agreement is comfortable, and comfort is a poor test of whether something is true. The suggestion is not that crowds are always wrong, only that finding yourself inside one is worth checking, because the same position can be reached by thinking or by drifting. It is easy to mistake the relief of not being argued with for the feeling of being right.

When everyone around you is nodding at the same thing, try to state the strongest case against it. If you cannot, you may be holding the view rather than having reasoned your way to it. You can still end up agreeing, and now you will know why.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where have you agreed with the crowd without checking your own view?
