Do not overrate what you have received, nor envy others. He who envies others does not obtain peace of mind.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Comparison is the mechanism being pointed at, and it runs in both directions. Overvaluing what came to you attaches your standing to it; envying what came to someone else measures your life against a version of theirs you are mostly inventing. Either way the reference point sits outside you and keeps moving, which is why nothing ever settles. Envy is especially costly because it is continuous and delivers nothing.

When envy shows up, treat it as information rather than a fault. Ask what specifically you want, in plain terms. Often it is smaller and more reachable than the whole life you were comparing yourself with.
