The cause is hidden. The effect is visible to all.

— Ovid

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

People see the outcome, the outburst, the collapse, the sudden success, and almost never what produced it. That imbalance leads to hasty judgements in both directions, blaming someone for a reaction whose cause was invisible or envying a result whose long preparation nobody witnessed. Your own effects are visible to others in exactly the same way, stripped of the reasons only you know.

When someone’s behaviour baffles or irritates you, ask what might be underneath it that you cannot see. And when you are judged on a visible result, consider whether explaining the cause would help, or whether the work is better left to speak.
