Man is equally incapable of seeing the nothingness from which he emerges and the infinity in which he is engulfed.

— Blaise Pascal

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Two things lie beyond your sight in opposite directions: the nothing from which you emerged, and the vastness that surrounds you on every side. You cannot see to the bottom of the first or the edge of the second, and neither can anyone else. Standing between them is the ordinary human position, and most days you manage it by simply not looking. When you do look, the effect need not be frightening; it can put the size of a day’s troubles in proportion.

Give that sense of scale a few quiet minutes when you have them. Notice which of this week’s worries still seem large beside it and which shrink. The ones that keep their size deserve your attention, and the rest may have been taking more of it than they are worth.
