Think for yourselves and let others enjoy the privilege to do so too.

— Voltaire

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Independent judgement is widely admired and far less often extended to other people. Once you have worked something out for yourself, it is tempting to treat anyone who reached a different conclusion as simply not having thought hard enough. That undoes the whole value of it. If thinking for yourself is worth something, it stays worth something when it leads somebody else where you would not go.

Next time you disagree with someone who has clearly considered the matter, resist the urge to convert them. Ask how they got there instead. You may keep your view, but you will hold it with more respect for the person across the table.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Whose different conclusion do you struggle to leave alone?
