No evil can happen to a good man, either in life or after death.

— Plato

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Terrible things plainly happen to good people, and nothing here denies it. The point is subtler: what is best in a person, their goodness itself, is not something misfortune can reach. Pain, loss and injustice can take a great deal, but they cannot go back and undo the kindness a person has lived, and death does not undo it either.

If you are grieving someone good, you may find some comfort in that, or it may feel too thin to hold right now, and both are understandable. It does not explain the suffering. It only suggests that the goodness you loved was never at its mercy.
