Those who are at war with others are not at peace with themselves.

— William Hazlitt

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Constant quarrels with other people often have a source closer to home. Someone uneasy with their own choices, or carrying a resentment they cannot admit, tends to find the irritations outside more numerous, and the fights become a way of discharging tension that has nowhere else to go. Not every conflict works like that, since some are forced on people who wanted none of it.

When you notice yourself in a run of clashes, it may be worth pausing before examining the other side. Ask what has been unsettled in you lately. Dealing with that often quiets more than any victory would.
