A lie which is half a truth is ever the blackest of lies.

— Alfred Lord Tennyson

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

A partial truth is harder to catch than an invention. Everything checkable holds up, the tone is sincere, and the deception lives in what was left out, so the listener has nowhere obvious to push. It also hands the speaker a defence, since nothing said was actually false. That defence is what makes the technique so corrosive once it is spotted.

Audit your own accounts for the omission rather than the falsehood. If somebody would feel misled on learning the missing part, that is the test, and the repair is to say it before they find it. Add the awkward clause and notice how much lighter it is to carry.
