Truth is confirmed by inspection and delay falsehood by haste and uncertainty.

— Tacitus

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Accurate accounts get stronger the longer you look at them, because the details keep fitting together. False ones need speed: decide now, before you check, while the feeling is still high. That is why urgency is such a reliable warning sign, whether in a sales pitch, a rumour, or your own certainty about someone’s motives.

When something demands an immediate answer, that is usually the moment to slow down rather than keep pace. Sleep on it and see what survives the morning. Anything true will still be true tomorrow, and very little honest is damaged by a delay.
