Books are good enough in their own way, but they are a poor substitute for life.

— Robert Louis Stevenson

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Reading about something is a real form of knowing and it is not the same as having done it, and the difference is oddly invisible from inside a well-read life. Books can also become a comfortable way of preparing indefinitely, accumulating understanding of a thing you are never going to attempt. The gap between an informed opinion and actual experience is usually wider than the reader believes.

Name the subject you have read most about and done least of. Then do the smallest real version of it, badly, this month. Reading afterwards will make far more sense than reading beforehand did.
