Trust your instinct to the end, though you can render no reason.

— Ralph Waldo Emerson

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Instinct is compressed experience: thousands of situations processed into a signal that turns up before the reasoning does. Its weakness is that it cannot show its work, so it loses every argument against a confident explanation, including the bad explanations. None of that makes it right, but it does mean unease you cannot account for is evidence rather than noise.

When something feels wrong and you cannot say why, do not override it simply because you lost the debate. Slow down and gather more information instead. The reason often surfaces a week later, and by then you have not committed.
