Landlords, like all other men, love to reap where they never sowed.

GRATITUDE
The appetite named is general rather than confined to one trade. Given a position where returns arrive without effort, almost anybody takes them and quickly builds a story about why they are deserved, and the story feels sincere from the inside. The uncomfortable part is the phrase attaching it to all men rather than only to the other side.
Check the places where you receive more than you put in. Most people have one: an inheritance, a rate, a seniority, a piece of luck rebranded as merit. You do not have to renounce it, but knowing which of your returns were sown by somebody else keeps you honest and makes you harder to flatter.
Where has someone collected the harvest of your labour?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
