The reason men oppose progress is not that they hate progress, but that they love inertia.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Resistance to change is rarely about the change itself. What people are defending is the state of already knowing how things work, where they stand, and what will happen tomorrow, and any improvement costs them that temporarily. Framing them as enemies of the new misreads it; they are attached to the familiar, which is a different and much more sympathetic thing.

That changes how you would try to persuade anyone, including yourself. Reduce how much ground has to move at once, keep the parts of the routine that can be kept, and be specific about what stays the same. Most objections are about footing rather than direction.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Are you resisting an improvement because starting feels like effort?
