GRATITUDE
Two impulses that look identical from outside get separated here by who benefits. Wanting freedom means wanting other people to have room to act, including in ways you dislike, while wanting power means wanting the room for yourself and the say over everybody else. Both get argued for in the same high language, which is what makes the distinction useful.
Check yourself wherever you have influence. Ask whether your last intervention gave somebody more scope or less. That single question sorts a great deal of leadership behaviour into its honest categories.
Do you want freedom for everyone or authority for yourself?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
