Faith must trample under foot all reason, sense, and understanding.

— Martin Luther

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Trust that extends only as far as your own understanding is not really trust. The uncompromising version says that when reason and commitment collide, commitment holds, which plenty of people will reject outright. It also names something ordinary: every deep loyalty includes moments when the evidence in front of you looks bad and you stay anyway. Doing that well depends on knowing why you committed in the first place.

You do not have to accept the strong form to test the weak one. Ask where you stay loyal out of habit rather than judgement, and where you abandon things the moment they stop making sense. Telling those apart is the real work.
