Health is the soul that animates all the enjoyments of life, which fade and are tasteless without it.

— Seneca

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

While your body is working you barely notice it, and everything else gets to keep its flavour. Illness moves into the foreground and takes attention that would otherwise have gone to food, work, people, the whole texture of an ordinary day. Even so, many people find real pleasure while unwell, and they are not doing it wrong.

If your health is good, the useful response is not gratitude alone but maintenance kept up while nothing is wrong. If it is not good, the same principle holds in miniature: protect whatever still gives you pleasure and refuse to let it be crowded out.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What did you enjoy freely before your body made it harder?
