All commend patience, but none can endure to suffer.

— Thomas Fuller

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Praising a virtue is free; practising this one means staying inside something unpleasant without acting to end it. Patience is admired precisely because it is rare, and it is rare because the cost gets paid in exactly the currency people avoid. Everyone advising you to wait is doing so from outside the waiting.

Remember that when advice arrives, and remember it about your own advice to others. If you are in a long wait, look for what makes the time bearable rather than for more resolve, since resolve runs out and structure does not. And be careful about telling somebody to be patient unless you are willing to sit there with them.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where do you praise patience while refusing to wait yourself?
