Life cannot subsist in society but by reciprocal concessions.

— Samuel Johnson

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Living near other people costs something continuously, and the cost gets paid in small surrenders neither side keeps count of. The noise tolerated, the preference dropped, the turn taken by somebody else. Everybody conceding nothing produces a place nobody can live in, which is why those surrenders are not weakness but the actual mechanism.

Trouble starts when one party stops conceding and the other does not notice for a year. Look at your closest arrangements and ask whether the giving still runs both ways. If it has gone one-directional, say so early and plainly, because resentment collected quietly is far harder to undo than an imbalance named in month two.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which concession would ease a standoff you are currently in?
